In the biblical story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, Jesus multiplied loaves of bread and fish to feed a large crowd. Mathew 14:13-21.

Jews were already so devastated by diseases, the torment of overpopulation, and especially hunger that they voluntarily went to the place of deportation called Umschlagplatz, the reloading yard. To those who boarded the trains, the Germans promised 3 kg of bread and 1 kg of marmalade.

In the context of Palestinian  “sumud" (صمود) means steadfastness, perseverance, resilience, and endurance. It is often translated as "to remain, to stay, to stand firm.”

God. Multiply the loves of bread for life, not holocaust, or genocide. Let each hand break and offer, not strike or withhold. May our hunger be for justice, not dominion or blood. Teach us to feed the living, not sanctify the dead by slaughter. Amen.
